In 2015 David Mallinson completed the build of his 4" Foster engine known as Lexi. Due to being unable to find a suitable quality set of working lamps to suit her he decided to use his extensive engineering skills and experience to create the Sarum lamps, which inspired the creation of The Traction Engine Lamp Company.
David’s experience extends from starting his career as an apprentice sheet metal worker and coppersmith, moving into the dairy industry and later transferring his skills into the aircraft industry qualifying as a coded welder and aircraft skin maker.
Following over 20 years of running a successful business manufacturing yacht fittings with his wife Alison, they have now decided to retire and enjoy seeing the world and family, handing the business on to fellow steam enthusiast Chris Sterriker.
Chri’s background is broad, ranging from agriculture to manufacture and now sales and demonstration of Agricultural and Farm machinery. The single constant throughout his life has been his passion for all things steam, especially steam traction engines.
Chris met David in June 2019 at a rally in Moors Valley Country Park and stayed in touch ever since.
In 2020 he purchased a 4 ½" scale Burrell agricultural engine and has been expanding his skills through maintenance of his pride and joy.
When David expressed a desire to retire and hand on the lamp making to someone with the same passion and desire Chris decided this was just what he wanted.
Chris has been learning all the skills and busy setting up his workshop to enable him to bring you the same quality lamps that David has been able to do. He is looking forward to this new venture and hopes to open the books for orders very soon. Please bear with him while he gets the workshop ready for production and look out for all your favourite lamps (and possibly some new items) coming in the future.
